Pyrometers

Pyrometers are devices that measure the temperature of a substance without contacting it. They are ideal for quick, spot measurements.

A common application is measuring the temperature of incandescent materials in steel or plastic plants or foundries. That is, in demanding industrial environments that are corrosive, dirty, and/or have high humidity and temperatures.

Therefore, pyrometer are targeted at the Industrial market with the aim of minimizing production costs, detecting manufacuring defects, reducing energy consumption and to minimizing the environmental impact of industrial activities through process optimization.

The following table shows the main applications in the industrial market and the featured products related to them.

Thermal cameras

Thermal cameras convert the infrared radiation emitted by bodies or objects—invisible
to the human eye—into visible images in real time. In other words, they measure the
temperature of an object without physical contact. Unlike pyrometers, thermal

imaging cameras generate a complete image of the heat distribution, facilitating vision
in total darkness and the identification of hot or cold spots.

They typically use a sensor called a microbolometer, whose electrical resistance
changes when heated by the received radiation. Their maximum sensitivity is in the
long-wave infrared (LWIR) range, although there are also cameras in the medium-wave
infrared (MWIR) range. These are more expensive if they are cooled, or less sensitive if
they are not.

NDIR gas sensors

Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) gas sensors are devices that rely on the absorption of
infrared light to detect and quantify gases. Unlike catalytic or metal-oxide gas sensors,
they are highly accurate, stable, and used for continuous monitoring in safety and air
quality applications.

NDIR sensors are commonly used to prevent accidents in industry, as well as to
monitor proper production by quantifying gases in the environment. They are also
frequently used in domestic applications to detect hazardous gases, such as carbon monoxide, or other gases of interest, such as carbon dioxide. Finally, they can be used in environmental monitoring for the detection and quantification of hazardous particles (VOCs, volatile organic compounds) and refrigerant gases.

Spectrometers and other devices

Spectrometers are instruments used to characterize materials quickly and non-destructively, making them essential in quality control, pharmaceutical research, and chemical analysis.

They work by emitting infrared light, which strikes the sample, causing vibrations in
the molecular bonds of the material being detected. Certain frequencies are absorbed and others transmitted, generating a unique spectrum (the molecule’s «signature»).

The most common type of spectrometer is the FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared)
spectrometer.
